Sunday 1st June – Konqueror Bug Day

Posted by grundleborg on May 31, 2008

I’m sorry, but I’m writing yet another post today! Tomorrow (Sunday, June 1st) we will have another Konqueror Bug Triage Day. Details, as usual on Techbase. Hopefully we can finish the Konqueror-general bugs at last this weekend!

In case you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last three months, here’s the obligatory introduction to Bug Days.

Bug Days are run regularly by the Bugsquad. We take an application and look through all its old bug reports, seeing which of them can be reproduced on recent versions of KDE, and which cannot. For those bugs that still exist, we try to provide as much detail as possible to make it easier for the developers to fix them. Bug Days are a great way to contribute to KDE because you don’t need any programming knowledge – just a copy of a recent version of KDE (or if you don’t have that, use KDE4daily or the Bugsquad LiveCD). Come to #kde-bugs on where we coordinate the day’s work. You can come for as short or long a time as you like – every little helps!

Bug Day 4 has begun

Posted by grundleborg on May 18, 2008

Bug Day 4 has begun. Come and help us clean up konqueror bugs. We’re gathering in #kde-bugs at this moment!

In case you don’t already know Bug Days are a great way to help KDE, even if you have no programming experience at all. The Bugsquad are a really friendly bunch, honest, so don’t worry about asking dumb questions – we won’t flame you!

Bug Day 4. Oh yes, we’re still going…

Posted by grundleborg on May 14, 2008

Would you know it, its almost 2 weeks since the last bug day, so its time to get psyched up for the next one. Bug Day 4. We’ll be continuing the work started last time on the Konqueror-general bugs. There’s an article on the dot that gives the details of exactly what’s going on. I won’t repeat that all here, but the important point is, anyone can do Bug Triage… that includes you! So come along to #kde-bugs on Sunday and help make KDE rock even more.

Reminder: Bug Day 3

Posted by grundleborg on May 3, 2008

As previously announced, bug day 3 will take place tomorrow (Sunday) with the usual start time of 0:00 UTC (although early and/or late arrivals are, of course, welcome). In the first two bug days, we dealt with KHTML’s bugs. For bug day 3, we are moving on to general konqueror bugs, and there’s even more of them (1640 at last count). So, if you want to join in (no programming skills required), come to #kde-bugs on tomorrow and say hello. There is also a Techbase page containing more details.

In case you’re getting bored with konqueror bug triage, the bugquad will be organising something a bit different in the near future, so keep your eyes on early next week to find out first what we are planning.

BugDay 2 Results

Posted by grundleborg on April 21, 2008

Bug Day 2 is over, and I’m happy to announce that we have completed the triage of KHTML bugs. However if you missed out, do come along and help, as there is still lots of work to do. We’ve got to double check and follow up on hundreds of bugs before the task is properly complete.

Now for the statistics I promised. (Disclaimer: I make no guarantees that these statistics are any more accurate than the results of a monkey trying to write Shakespeare on a typewriter. If you want to be certain, check for yourself.)

  • Over 100 people visited our IRC channel during the day, with a peak of 60 at the same time at one point.
  • 18 people tackled at least one set of bugs each (up from 11 on bug day 1), with a total of 27 months of bugs being triaged, containing a total of…
  • 500 bugs triaged.
  • ~100 bugs were not present in the current svn trunk of Konqueror, so these will either be scheduled for backporting or closed in due course.

However, in my opinion, the most pleasing thing that happened on the bug day was the response to my half way update blog post. I asked if anyone could help us with some Outlook Web Access and Printing bugs since none of the active triagers were able to test these bugs. Within ten minutes of posting the blog, 2 people had already come to the IRC channel to volunteer to help with these two requirements. Within 2 hours, at least 6 people had come forward. This just shows what a healthy community KDE has – that people are so readily willing to step forward and help out.

Bug Day 2 – Half Way Update

Posted by grundleborg on April 20, 2008

In terms of time, we’re now past halfway through the second in the latest series of bug days. If you’re not already in #kde-bugs on helping out, you should join right now! We need your help! Nothing more than a computer running KDE4 is needed.

Now for some details of what we’ve accomplished so far. We’re nearly halfway through the ~615 bugs we set out to triage today, but I’m hoping that we’ll finish due to the larger numbers of people involved during European waking hours. We’ve got a nice long list of bugs that just need to be double checked but are almost certainly fixed, so that should make a good healthy dent on Konqueror’s tally. And, my favourite statistic of the day so far, we have already overtaken the number of people who took part on the first bug day! I promise there will be more statistics of a more quantitative nature in about 12 hours when the day is over.

Lastly, we have a few bugs that need unusual requirements to test, so if you have a working printer, a “Microsoft Exchange Web Access” account or java running inside Konqueror, we’d love to hear from you right now. Come to #kde-bugs and announce yourself and what requirement you meet and you will be worshipped for evermore by the bugsquad.

UPDATE: Thanks to all you Outlook Web Access users who helped us to triage those bugs so quickly! We still need people with printers and java though.

Bug Day 2 Special Requests

Posted by grundleborg on April 19, 2008

Don’t forget, bug day 2 is tomorrow – 20th April. Come and join the fun – yes that means YOU! By reading this blog, you almost certainly meet the one requirement to join the bug squad – you’re a KDE user. Read my earlier post to find out more.

We also have some bugs that require setups we don’t all have available to test. So, if you can meet any of the requirements below, please come to #kde-bugs on and shout out to us any day, any time. We’d love to have your help to assess just a few bugs.

  • Your computer is set to Japanese locale.
  • You know about or use right-to-left languages like, for example, Arabic.
  • You can read hindi (Devanagari script).
  • You have a slow computer (<1GHz) running KDE

If you fit any of the criteria listed above, please drop by on IRC and shout. We’d really appreciate your help to fix a few bugs.

Konqueror Bug Day 1: Results

Posted by grundleborg on April 7, 2008

The first bug day in a while is over, many thanks to everyone who helped out. It was great to see new people getting involved (as well as people who have been doing it many years more than me 🙂 ), and I hope everyone will be back for the next one. It won’t be next weekend (too many KDE developer events/meetings), but I’m sure it will be soon.

For those who like to measure things in numbers rather than feelings, here are some statistics. (no promises about the accuracy ;))

Products triaged: all khtml related components of Konqueror

Bugs triaged: 355.

Time period triaged: up to the end of 2004 + about half of 2005.

Bugs that could not be replicated (ie. probably fixed): 92.

New testcases written: 10’s of them, probably more than 30.

Enthusiastic new KDE contributors who are desparate for another bug-day: loads (I hope).

So, we’ve still got a fair few to go on these components, so another day is definitely in order. Its also time to work on the techbase pages, using the questions asked today as a guide to make them easier to understand. If you want to keep up with exactly what’s being planned, then you should join the bugsuad mailing list to keep up with the planning.

UPDATE: And of course, if you want to get involved in bug triaging yourself, drop by to #kde-bugs on where there are always plenty of friendly triagers to help you get started.

Bug Triage Day – Halfway Update

Posted by grundleborg on April 6, 2008

So, we’ve been hard at work for just over 12 hours now, and the bug triage day is going great. Thanks to a team of triagers based mainly in America and Asia (and a few nocturnal Europeans), we’re down 172 bugs already. The IRC channel has 26 people in it right now, which is great considering it hasn’t got much past 5 for the last year. Its great that there are so many people joining in to take their first steps in KDE development.

So now, the remaining half of the bug day should be far more productive. The Europe-based triagers are far more numerous than their Asia and America based counterparts, and they have just started to come online in the last few hours, so I hope that by the end of the day we will have far exceeded double the current tally.

Most importantly, we’re only half way through, which means *you* can still join in! Come to #kde-bugs on and help keep KDE great.

I’ll be back with another update in about 12 hours when the day is complete. In the meantime, join the party! You’re missing out!

Bugsquad Mailing List

Posted by grundleborg on April 4, 2008

Thanks to the wonderful KDE sysadmins, the bugsquad now has its very own, shiny new mailing list: bugsquad AT kde DOT org. So, if your interested in helping make KDE even better by triaging bugs, joining the mailing list is the place to start.

Since I’m writing about bugs, I can’t not remind people about the Konqueror triage day this Sunday (6th April) starting 0:00 UTC. Join the mailing list, come to our irc channel, #kde-bugs, and do your bit to help keep KDE the best free desktop environment. Anyone can do bug triage – all you need is the will to help.

More information on the triage day can be found in my previous blog entry.
