Getting back to regular posts

Posted by grundleborg on February 20, 2009

I haven’t been writing here regularly since last Summer but I think its finally time to get back to regular updates on what I’m doing in KDE. However, this long absence from the planet doesn’t mean I haven’t been contributing.

I’ve been working madly for the last couple of months on getting the infrastructure in place in KDE for widespread use of Telepathy. Nothing exciting to show off yet, but I will be posting regular updates on the progress of this work, starting imminently.

It’s great to see the plasma browser plugin being mentioned and played with again. I plan to work on making it more than just a proof-of-concept again soon, but not just yet. I’m waiting until a secure ecmascript API is in place for plasmoids. Otherwise, as people rightly pointed out on the original blog post comments, it would be a security disaster. Perhaps the KDE 4.4 timeframe will be the right time to resume development of it.

Also, I’m really happy to see the Bugsquad still going strong… This incarnation is rapidly approaching its first anniversary – perhaps we should find some bug-tastic way of celebrating…

KDE Pim Krush Day 2

Posted by grundleborg on June 7, 2008

After the first small but successful Krush Day, we are having another this Sunday. If you didn’t make it last time (or even if you did), please come along to #kde-bugs and help keep KDE rocking.

The following announcement will appear on the dot as soon as they resolve the technical difficulties, but since its past midnight here, and I can hardly stay awake any longer, I’ll post it here first.

———————-

This Sunday (8th June), the KDE Bugsquad will host a KDE PIM Krush day. The aim of the day will be to find and document as many of the bugs in the PIM applications of the upcoming KDE 4.1 release as possible. The day will begin at 0:00 UTC on Sunday and continue until the day is over throughout the world. Krush Days are an excellent opportunity for KDE users keen to make their first contribution to the KDE project. You don’t need to set aside a huge amount of time – as little as ten minutes will be enough to do some testing – nor do you need to have any programming experience. All you need is a recent version of KDE. KDE 4.1 Beta 1 will do, or a newer version from SVN. If you don’t want to install KDE 4.1 on your system, then the Virtual Machine Image kde4daily is ideal. Just come along to #kde-bugs on irc.freenode.net where the Bugsquad will help you get started. More information can be found on the Krush Day Techbase page.

Sunday 1st June – Konqueror Bug Day

Posted by grundleborg on May 31, 2008

I’m sorry, but I’m writing yet another post today! Tomorrow (Sunday, June 1st) we will have another Konqueror Bug Triage Day. Details, as usual on Techbase. Hopefully we can finish the Konqueror-general bugs at last this weekend!

In case you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last three months, here’s the obligatory introduction to Bug Days.

Bug Days are run regularly by the Bugsquad. We take an application and look through all its old bug reports, seeing which of them can be reproduced on recent versions of KDE, and which cannot. For those bugs that still exist, we try to provide as much detail as possible to make it easier for the developers to fix them. Bug Days are a great way to contribute to KDE because you don’t need any programming knowledge – just a copy of a recent version of KDE (or if you don’t have that, use KDE4daily or the Bugsquad LiveCD). Come to #kde-bugs on irc.freenode.net where we coordinate the day’s work. You can come for as short or long a time as you like – every little helps!

KDE PIM Krush Day 1 Results & Krush Day 2

Posted by grundleborg on May 31, 2008

Last Sunday the KDE Bugsquad held a Krush day for KDE PIM applications. Our aim was to find bugs in KDE’s PIM applications, which will be released for the first time in the KDE4 series with KDE 4.1. About 10 people took part in the session (which was only announced on the day) and they found about 60 issues with the applications tested, including Kontact, KMail, Akregator. About a dozen of these bugs were fixed on the day, most impressively for KOrganizer, for which nearly all the bugs found are already fixed! Many thanks to all the people who helped out to make sure KDE PIM 4.1 is as stable and reliable as possible.

Due to the success of this Krush Day, the Bugsquad will host another KDE PIM Krush day on Sunday 8th June. More information about that will come soon, but for now, just put a big X in your diary whether you are a KDE developer, bug-triager or just enthusiastic user!

KDE PIM Krush Day is now!

Posted by grundleborg on May 25, 2008

OK, so this really should have been announced before, but due to a combination of factors including my being offline for 2 days (and still on a very unreliable connection), it didn’t get announced.

Today will be the first of several days focused on finding bugs in KDE PIM 4.1 alpha/beta releases. KDE PIM (which includes Kotnact, KMail, Akregator, KNode and several other PIM apps) has not yet been released with KDE 4, and these days aim to spot as many bugs as possible in them so they can be fixed before the final release.

In order to take part, you will need a copy of KDE SVN trunk, or an aplha/beta/snapshot version of KDE 4.1. If you don’t have any of these, there is a Live DVD (about 900mb) created specially so you can join in with the Krush day anyway. Come and join us at #kde-bugs on irc.freenode.net, and look at the Techbase page for where to detail bugs you find.

Bug Day 4. Oh yes, we’re still going…

Posted by grundleborg on May 14, 2008

Would you know it, its almost 2 weeks since the last bug day, so its time to get psyched up for the next one. Bug Day 4. We’ll be continuing the work started last time on the Konqueror-general bugs. There’s an article on the dot that gives the details of exactly what’s going on. I won’t repeat that all here, but the important point is, anyone can do Bug Triage… that includes you! So come along to #kde-bugs on Sunday and help make KDE rock even more.

Reminder: Bug Day 3

Posted by grundleborg on May 3, 2008

As previously announced, bug day 3 will take place tomorrow (Sunday) with the usual start time of 0:00 UTC (although early and/or late arrivals are, of course, welcome). In the first two bug days, we dealt with KHTML’s bugs. For bug day 3, we are moving on to general konqueror bugs, and there’s even more of them (1640 at last count). So, if you want to join in (no programming skills required), come to #kde-bugs on irc.freenode.net tomorrow and say hello. There is also a Techbase page containing more details.

In case you’re getting bored with konqueror bug triage, the bugquad will be organising something a bit different in the near future, so keep your eyes on planet.kde.org early next week to find out first what we are planning.
